THE NEW OFFICE SEEKERS.
In some comments on the result oi the elections, the " Nelson Colonist' says :
There has heen a mysterious talk among a few young members and new candidates, and that they are youn<* and new is the only excuse for their profound simplicity. That talk has been to the effect that a new party could be evolved from some curious " cave " of the ocean of political existence, a party with neither Stafford nor Fox at its head, but in whom the country would have confidence. Mr Stafford has become deservedly unpopular. His conduct as a Minister in connection with the Public Debts Act will never be condoned or forgotten, nor will his action in the wretched affair of the lease of the Governor's residence, when the house stood aghast at his audacity. It will not do to bring him to the front, and so the story is that Sir David Munro is intended to be the next Premier (if he gets a seat), with Mr Richmond in the
Native Office, Mr Stafford Colonial Secretary, Mr Stevens Treasurer, (but he has not been returned). Mr Curtis was spoken of as PostmasterGenera], and possibly Mr Travers as Minister af Justice! And to Bee how these gentlemen are working together, gives something like reality to the story. Sir David Monro proposes Mr Curtis, and in doing so praises Mr J. C. Richmond. Mr Curtis certifies to one correct vote by Sir David Monro. Mr Curtis and Mr Richmond run in couples for Nelson City; and the simple-souled Travers leans lovingly on Mr Richmond as the twain contest the City of Wellington together. Here is the happy family all lying down together, watching for the prey of office. Are the public prepared to accept a Ministry formed of such materials as these? We do not believe it; and the more this town and the country at large have time to consider the situation, the less will they like such a combination.
