Mr William Swanson has been returned as member of the General Assembly for Newton. The contract to raise the ship City of Auckland amounted to £9l. Flour has receded twenty shillings ; present quotations are £l3 to £ls. January 2G. The news from Ohinemuri is, that a meeting of all the natives, including Te Kooti, is to be held at Ohiperoa, at which it will he proposed to revive the old Maori customs, and to forbid intercourse with Europeans. Another meeting called by Mere Kuril, is to be held ; she wants help to stop communication with Tauranga. An attempt which was made to float the City of Auckland failed, for blio drifted into deeper water. A second attempt will be made this evening. A fire occurred hist night, when the only kerosene store in the city, containing twelve hundred cases, was totally destroyed; The damages are estimated at £I7OO. The fire is suspected to be the work of an incendiary. It was fortunate the building was isolated.

At Grahamstown Mr Curtis, of the Pacific Hotel, discovered a bundle of lighted rags, wet with kerosene, under

Another fire has occurred. The Choral Society's Music Hall has been totally destroyed by fire. Tho buile!ing was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company's office for £I4OO. The musical instruments were insured. The School soiree' had been Ixld there on the previous evening) this closed about eleven o'clock, and the tire broke out at three o'clock the following morning. The City of Auckland has been raised and brought to the jetty.
