NOTHING LIKE SAUSAGES.
A Berlin correspondent writes: — " Forty thousand thalers down, which is ,£OOOO English money, for the invention of a new sort of sausage! Tins is the premium lately paid by the Prussian Government to a certain happily ingenious cook, one Gruneberg by raine, for money's worth, as appears to me, after a curious visit which I made to a busy scene ou the other side of the Thiergarten. The peaceful industries—and what more peaceful industry, I ask, than the manufacture of sausages can the human imagination conceive ? —spring even out of war, as a soul of goodness in things evil. But for the war, ■ Ilerr Gruneberg'a, or rather the Prussian Government's " Erbswurst," might never have existed, would ce tainly not have sprung into existence and fame together. It snonis that the inventive Gruneberg, just as Von Moltke commenced his feat of throwing 300,000 soldiers on the frontier in fourteen days, submitted for the inspection of the high military authorities a strange ) looking, thick, and peculiarly hard sausage, measuring a little more in length than its diameter. On being, not without force, cut through, it was found to be in fact an extremely solidified sort of portable pea-soup, containing a plentiful admixture of flesh cut in cubes like dice ; and an explanatory statement was given to tbe effect that this pea-soup sausage, or Erkiourst, had been, by artful secret, so prepared as to bo preservable fo' y ears in any climate."
