THE UNEMPLOYED IN AUCKLAND. INTENDED VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR. {BY ELEQTRW TELEGRAPH.) (From the West Coast limes.) Auckland. Jan. 21. Via the Thames. 500 unemployed met last night under auspices of the sWorking Men's Protection League, and adopted a petition to the Superintendent stating that they were in a condition of destitution approaching starvation, and requesting employment. They adopted also a petition to the Legislature of Victoria, requesting them to send steamers to couvey away the unemployed and their families, stating their willingness to repay half of their passage money within a certan period after landing. To-day two hundred unemployed assembled outsidethe Superintendent's office, and sent in a deputation, who returned after some time, reporting that the Superintendent's statement was that no employment could be given at present, but that the Railway Appropriations would be passed in a few days, and that the work would be proceeded with as soon as possible. There were expressions of dissatis. faction, 'and the meeting demanded to see the Superintendent outside. Us refused, stating that it was not dignV fled to address a '.disorderly mob. The crowd stormed the hall, and threatened to break into the Superintendent's room. A posse of police cleared the building of the crowd, who proceeded to meet in the Volunteer Drill Shed, to eon«ider what further action should be taken. A proposal was made to pull down the Provincial Council chamber. Arrived.—Lerd Ashley. Mr Brauigan is enlisting men for the defence of Waikato. Two hundred, armed with Snider rifles, are to be sent to Taupo. Dunedin, Jan. 21. The following is the result of the polling in the City.—Bathgate, 694; Reynolds, 692 ; Macassey, 545-. Mr Bathgate and Mr Reynolds are therefore elected. Mr Bathgate's strong protection views secured him the votes of all the working classes. Dunedin, Jan. 22. Clio to Milford Sound, and other inlets on tho SouthWest Coast of the Middle Island, ami afterwards the Clio will proceed with His Excellency to the Bluff and Dunedin, whence they intend visiting Lake Wakatip, the goldfields, and the interior of the Province of Otago and Canterbury, proceeding also to Hot tika, and the interior of Westlani The tour is to occupy two months. In April or May, Lady remove to the new Governor's ho® at Wellington, The unemployed last night presented a petition to the Provincial Council) which hastily passed the Kaipara Bailway Bill for the purpose of providing work. Taueanga, Jan. 21. The Hon. Mr M'Lean left at 12a.m. for Maketu, on the East Coast. Ngae-te-Rangi is confident as to the success of Mr M'Lean's policy. Great dissatisfaction is expressed bj the Arawas at the Native Lands Court adjournment. Wellington, Jan. 21. The Government " Gazette" republishes the regulations to all in the service not to take any part in political affairs, otherwise than by recording their votes, and a violation of this order will be punished.
