The s.s. Kennedy, Captain Whitwell, left Nelson for W'estport on Thursday'at 1 p.m., and arrived off the bar yesterday at 10 a.m. She entered the river and moored alongside the wharf about 1 p.m. The p.s. Charles Edward, Captain Holmes, sailed from Greymouth for this port about midnight on Thursday .; arrived off the bar yesterday at 10.45 a.m., and alongside the wharf at 1 p.m. She left for Nelson the same tide.

The schooner Ceres, from Melbourne, is now due, having been expected to leave that port for Westport shorth after the new year. Advices of her having sailed are not yet, however, to hand.

The insurance companies in Sydney have accepted the fact that the Dashing Wave, from Foo Choo, is lost, ami will pay insunnce on the Ist of March, if not arrived then. The hull and cargo are insured for about £23,000. A storm of of fearful severity raged at Carnarvon lately, driving several vessels from their anchors on t«> the beach. Mr Richards, tlie coastguard officer, was on the promenade, and observing a schooner part her cables, he exhibited blue-lights, to enable .the crew of the vessel to judge of their position. When the storm, was at its height, Mr Richards stood on the promenade, and observing the schooner was about to strike, he held up his arms, an I called to the. crew to jump ashore. At this ivoment he stepped to the right, and not observing a breach in the wall, was was ed awuy. The poor fellow clung for some time to the broken-cables of the schooner, and, despite the efforts of the crew of the vessel, who honked him frequently with the boathuok, he was washed away. The promenade on e->ch side of the club-house was breached in several places, and so great was the storm that the sea-water was sent like a shower-bath over the tops of the old town ■walls. Mr Richards was an energetic officer, and his los 3is much deplored.—" Home News."

TRIAL TRIP OF THE EXPERIMENT. A preliminary trial of the model boat Experiment, to test the new principle of propulsion invented by Mr W. Akersten, took p'.ace in the hai boryesterday forenoon. Fori* men were placed at the cranks, and immediately upon the power being applied, she glided smoothly and swiftly ahead, attaining a speed of 8J- knots against a Rood tide. After running about 'three-quarters of a mile, a fracture occurred in one of the pinion-wheels, ■which necessitated the stoppage of the machinery, and a trial was then made -of the boat's sailing powers. Notwiths'anding she ■was without ballast, she appeared remarkably stiff, ami experts are of opinion that there is no e aft in Nelson capable of touching her. The result fully realized the inventor's expectations, and a further trial of the boat will take place in the presence of-the-shareholders as soon as the repairs have been made.— " Nelson Examiner."
