_ The riddle steamer Charles Edward arrived aiontisiviu the wharf on Sunday evening at nine o clock. She left Nelson at 10.30 p.m. on Saturday, experienced light winds arid fain on the passage dpwn, and arrived off the bar at (3 p.m. She bring fifty-three passengers, of whom thirty are for this pirt. and a full cargo, with a quantity of stock on deck. She sailed 3eot.erdc.y evening for Greymouth.

The s.s. Storm Bird, which was reported in a recent issue, as. having heen sold to a southern firm, has been purchased by.Mr James Manning, of Dunedin, and will be employed in the Dunediu and West Coast trade. The steamer Walkbi left Greymouth at 11 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived at Westpurt the following morning. Discharged 40 tons of coal, arid sailed for Nelson last night, where she will .tranship passengers into the s.s. Storm Bird for Lyttclton and Dunediu. The sc'iooner Tliree Friends reached Westporf from Charleston on Sunday.

A very unfortunate accident occurred to the schooner Lady Bird on Sunday evening, bho was |moored off the corner of the Reclaimed Land, close in shore, and in shallow warer to be out ot the way of the shipping An unexpected shift of the light easterly wind which prevailed on Sunday, set her acrossher anchor and as the tide receded she gradually sett lad down upon it, a portion, of it going through her bottom. One or more of her compartments filled, but the water was too .shallow to allow her to sink. There is no difficulty in 'the way of pumping her outj and when this is accomplished,;sJio will be taken round to the slip and have the hole patched up.—" Wellington Evening Post," Jan.'S. A supposition might be ventured concerning the wreck lately discovered near the mouth of the Tahtnku. and described in our issue of yesterday. According to the Canterbury and Nelson papers-of February and March, 1800, the ship Burmali, having on bowl an unusually large cargo for Otago, Canterbury, undNelson, awl including a valuable consignment of first-class horses and cattle,.together with twenty-one passengers, left London at the latter end of August, 1859, for Lybteltop, which ;porl she never reached. She was last heard of, when spoken by the Kegina, in lon. 97 W. and lat.. 48 S., within fourteen days' sail of New' Zealand. ' This was on the 17th November, 1859. The opinion of thu special constable, as .published by us, was that the wreck, which he describes as that of a ship, had plainly been lying upon the beach for some years, though a miner had informed him that he was prospecting on that beach in July, 1869, and'had then seen no traces of it; but it is possible that in comparing notes of such ii district as that a mistake might arise ai. to, the- precise locality spoken of. The constable also states that on the ship's nameboard were six letters partly obliterate, of which it was impossible t<> make out any but the first one, which appeared to,be a B or an .K, the initial letter, of course, of tho name " liurmah" being the former letter, while the word itself consists of six lettera. —" Otago Daily Times," Dec. 30.
