The steamer Charles Edward, Captain Holmes, left Westport on Saturday evening, and arrived at Nelson on Sunday at 1 p.m., in time to tranship her mails on board the steamer Airedale. The latter boat sailed for. Auckland at 6.25 on Sunday evening. The ketch Standard, from Charleston, ■which was reported off the bar on Thursday, but had subsequently to put to sea owing to contrary winds, hove in sight again on Saturday evening, and crossed the bar shortly after six o'clock. The schooner Maid of Erin, Capt. Cairns, is still detained in port owing to the heavy sin fon the bar. Early yesterday morning it was contemplated to proceed to sea, but as the sea increased and a falling barometer gave every indication of an. approaching storm, it was wisely decided to await a more favorable opportunity. 'Contrary to expectation, it has been found difficult to get a crew for the Cerberus, 4, iron armour-plated turret ship, in the port of Rochester. As this ship is lying in the Medway, off Chatham Dockyard, notice was given that a crew would be engaged for her at the Rochester Custom House, and, as the London rate of pay was offered to men and boys to work the ship out to Melbourne, where they would be discharged, it was thought t at plenty of hands would have been very ready to avail themselves of such an opportunity of getting to the Australian colony without cost and earning good wages. But the numbers offering have been insufficient, and application has been made to the Sailors' Home in London in order to fill up the vacancies. It is understood that some men do not like the idea of engaging in a turret ship after the fearful fate of the Captain ; but the Cerberus will not go out in the shape the will assume as a turret ship for defending the harbor of Melbourne; for after she has been take i from tho Tyne to Chatham dockyard 1 Ljh and strong iron bulwarks were built up from the original sides, of the Cerberus, and am ther deck added specially to fit her for her long voyage, the bulwarks and upper deck to be cleared away when she arrives at Melbourne. —'.« .' l imes,'* Sept. 20.. . £l' EZECTJiIC TELEGRAPH.
