NAVAL ENGAGEMENT OFF THE ENGLISH COAST.
The "Globe" of the 31stAugust says :
Our correspondent at Seaford sends us the following particulars this evening : —This morning, at six o'clock, the inhabitants and visitors of Seaford, on the coast of Sussex, where aroused by tho booming of guns, which were heard about every ten minutes. At ten o'clock, the two vessels were between six and seven miles from the coast, in a straight linj between Seaford and Newhaven. The French ship is a small one, compared with the Prussian, which has three masts and is full sail. The vessels continued to fire at' one another, and performed different manoeuvres for a considerable time. Both ships were perfectly seen with a glass from the Seaford Kail way Station, and the fire and smoke of each shot were visible. At 10.30 the French vessel was seen chasing her larger antagonist, and they then partly disappeared from sight.
