The English fund for the relief of the sick and wounded by the war now exceeds £165,000.
A brutal and treacherous attempt to murder two Irishmen, who had seceded from the Fenian organisation, has occurred near Rochdale. The culprits were captured. Advices from Hong Kong report further assassinations of foreigners by Chinese. It is reported that Chinese troops are being collected between Tientsin and Pekin, nominally for the protection of foreigners. Strong doubts are expressed as to this being the real intention of the movement. The British Government has resolved to adopt the small-bore Gattling mitrailleuse.
The Masonic fraternity of England have contributed £70,000 sterling for the relief of the families of the German soldiers.
O'Sullivan and O'Reilly, understood to be from the United States, have been arrested at Cork as Eenians. A uniform, revolver, and ammunition were found at thoir lodgings. Her Majesty has written a letter of condolence to the late Empress of the Trench.
A strong feeling exists amongst the working classes in England, against the war; and the Army and Navy are
crying out that England is suffering France to be ruined.
Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer, Lord Cardigan, and others, are blaming the inaction of Government, and its unprepareduess for war. The verdict of the Naval Committee inquiring into the loss of the iron-clad Captain, exonerates everybody connected with her construction and management.
