It is notified by the Collector of Customs that, in future, the Customs' Regulations Act, with respect to entering or clearing vessels, will be strictly enforced. Neither
steamers nor sailing vessels, unless carrying the English mail, will be entered or cleared on Sunday at any port in the Colony. The s.s. Wallabi arrived in Westport from Wellington and Wanganui' on Thursday evening, after a lengthened absence,
during which she has undergone very extensive repairs. The "Wellington Evening Post says : —" The s.s. Wallabi, which has recently undergone some very extensive repairs here, made her trial trip yesterday afternoon, when she proceeded to Evan's Bay, and returned after being swung and getting her compasses adjusted. Ihe Wallabi arrived here for repairs some fifteen weeks ago, and the work was entrusted to Mr E. W. Mills, of the Lion Foundry. The Wallabi was hauled up on Mr Thirkell's slip at the head of the bay just 13 weeks ago and the repairs were at once commenced. The repairs effected are of a most thorough and extensive character. Every doubtful plate in the hull has been cut out and replaced by new plates of the best material—in fact almost a new bottom has been put in, and upwards of 20 tons of new plates, angle iron, and rivets have been used. In the engine room, the engines have undergone a most searching overhaul, and amongst other things a new stop valve and a new government safety valve have been fixed. The boiler was removed, cleaned, repaired, and strengthened ; and new backs and crowns have been given to the furnaces. New stays have also been supplied. The decks have been relaid, and the old lining replaced by new, and two strong wooden stringers have been fixed inside for the purpose of stiffening the vessel. Altogether, the Wallabi is pronounced by competent judges to be now hi as perfect a state of repair as the day she was first launched, and to be stronger than she was orignally. The whole of the iron work has been executed by Mr Mills, all the necessary castings being made at the Lion Foundry. The wood work was executed by Mr Thirkell in a highly satisfactory manner. In the trial trip it was found that the Wallabi made a speed of about a knot and a half more than prior to her recent overhaul, the engines making 112 revolutions per minute against 95 previously. All the gentlemen on board (amongst whom were Captain Johnston, Marine Surveyor, and Mr Nancarrow, Inspector of steam vessels), expressed themselves highly pleased with the manner in which the repairs had been executed." The Wallabi brought a full cargo for Messrs Freeth and Greig, which she discharged at the South Spit, and proceeded to Greymouth yesterday evening, towing out the schooner Florence, also bound for Greymouth.
