The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1870.

At the hour wo write there is still no news of the arrival of the San Francisco mail, now seven days over due. The arrival of the City of Melbourne would have placed us in possession of five or six days later news from the seat of war, aud as the events likely to crowd into that short interval would be of a very important character, the public look forward with much interest to the arrival of the latest items of information furnished by the Atlantic Cable telegrams. The last accounts were very contradictory, each side claiming the victory; with the balance of probability, however, strongly on the side of the Prussians. Had they met with a serious check before Metz, the Grermans would scarcely have ventured to advance so many miles beyond it, establishing their headquarters on the right bank of the Marne at St Dizier, and advancing even to Eheims and Epernay. There would appear, however, some improbability about their marching direct on Paris and the telegram announcing a battle at Stenay, near the Belgian frontier, would go to prove the correctness of the London telegram, which states that the main German Army has made a northward movement to encounter MacMahcn once more. With a strong republican Government firmly established at Paris, an army forming under the walls of that city and a second army at Lyons, a fresh army forming on their left flank on the Loire, and MacMahon on their right flank, defeated, but not routed, and Bazaino with his army at Metz in their rear, the Germans will be yet obliged to exercise prudence. To advance upon Paris and to meet with a repulse or a defeat, with the forces in preparation on every side, would prove most disastrous to the German forces.
