BEPORTED FAILURE OF THE QUEENSLAND DIGGINGS. The s.s. City of Melbourne which arrived at Auckland from Sydney on the Bth inst., brings Australian news to the Ist, which, however,- has been chiefly anticipated by the s.s. Tararua, with Melbourne dates to September 3. From the former source we cull a few additional items. Sydney, September 1. Twenty-five thousand people visited the Exhibition building yesterday, and the place is thronged with visitors. The German residents here have, since the arrival of the news hy the mail of war between France and Prussia, been making enquiries in large numbers at the shipping offices, with a view of going home to join the Prussian army. Bertram wa3 hanged at Brisbane on the 30th ult., for robbery under arms ; he admitted having been concerned in three cases of sticking up< The construction of the overland telegraph from Queensland to Carpentaria has been temporarily suspended. The latest news from the Upper Cape diggings, Queensland, report them to be a complete failure. A crushing of twenty tons stone from the Criterion reef, Adelaide, shows 86 ozs of gold.
