AN EXPLANATION.
{To the Editor of the Westport Times.)
Sir, —I sincerely regret that my remarks with respect to Mr Harris bear the interpretation you have put on them in your issue of the 6th instant; and I candidly admit they cannot well bear any other. What I intended to say —and did not—was, there could be no doubt that Mr Harris was " implicated " in the charge, which, I think, bears quite a different meaning to bis being guilty of it; and I intended to say, and I believe did write it so in the manuscript—" it is earnestly hoped his defalcations, if any, will be confined to himself." I always carefully avoid expressing an opinion upon any charge which is sub judice, and I am exceedingly sorry to find that I have written so inadvertently in this instance. —I am, sir, your obedient servant, James Browse, Editor of the " Greymouth Star."
