RESIDENT MAGISTRATE COURT.
Monday, August 1. (Before E. C. Reid and S. Thorpe, Esqs., J. P.) Maria Jennings appeared, on remand, charged with assaulting Elizabeth Fry. The evidence of Mrs Fry was taken, which was corroboratory of the evidence heard on a previous day. The Bench remanded the prisoner till Wednesday the 3rd inst. Patrick White was charged with resisting and assaulting a bailiff in the execution of this duty, and also wkh escaping from the legal custody of the bailiff. The two charges were taken together. John Temperly gave evidence that on Eriday uight last he arrested the prisoner at Harrison's store, Giles Terrace. The prisoner resisted and struck him, and finally escaped from his custody. Constable Williams proved having arrested the prisoner at an hotel iu town, on Sunday afternoon. Witness had no difficulty in taking him in charge. White stated that on the Friday night he offered Temperly to accompany him in the morning, and that he proceeded on Saturday morning to Westport for the purpose of giving himself up. He went into the hotel in which he was arrested to have a wash and to lie down. The Bench inflicted a fine of £5, or, in default, seven days' imprisonment with hard labor.
