GOVERNMENT SCHEME GAINS CONFIDENCE.

THE MUREAY EEEFS. (JSr ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (from otjr own cobrespondent.) Wellington, Monday. The s.s. Phoebe arrived here yesterday with English mail via Pacific railway and Honolulu. The detention of the Wonga Wonga was due to shortness of coals and heavy gales. The mail agent, Mr Gray, has visited Washington and made satisfactory arrangements for the conveyance of mails. San Francisco papers give glowing accounts of the advantages of the overland route. The discussion in the Assembly here on the great Government scheme is likely to terminate to-morrow evening with Mr Vogel's reply. The scheme has gradually gained favor in the House, and is likely to be carried with modifications by a fair majority. Brighton, Monday. Have visited the Murray reefs, Upper Inangahua, and they are not nearly good as represented; but so little work having been done, it would be premature to give an absolute opinion. They consist of a blow of quartz on the surface, six feet thick and dipping northwards at an angle of 45 degrees. Very fine gold in the solid reef. AVill write further particulars.
