(Erom the Nelson Papers.) Wellington, July 4. The Court of Appeal was formally opened this morning, hut it was adjourned till Wednesday, in consequence of the absence of the Chief Justice and Judge Richmond. Thirty of the Maori prisoners were condemned to death on Saturday. The Judge, however, stated at the same time, that they would not be hung. A petition from Wanganui has been presented to the House of Representatives, praying that the Colony discontinue paying the Governor's salary. Much interest is felt in the forthcoming Financial debate. A modifification of the Colonial Treasurer's scheme is expected to bo agreed to by the House. The debate is not expected to commence before Wednesday. . June 5. The discussion on the. Budget is adjourned to Thursday. Tho Wanganui petition, requesting the House to refuse voting the Governor's salary, was not received. Mr M'Lean stated this afternoon, that the telegraph line was opened to Taupo; that another section of the

Urewera tribe had surrendered, twelve in number. Several dead bodies were found, showing that the enemy was reduced to great straits. The House agreed to a vote of £50,000 supply, from 30th June, in order to pay accounts due. Mr Stafford assented to the pro posed course. Deep and suppressed excitement prevails in the House regarding the approaching financial discussion. It is very doubtful as to the course of action parties or members may take. The Treasurer stated, that whatever decision might be come to, Government are anxious to bring their proposals into speedy operation* and if necessary enable the country to pronounce an opinion on them quickly. He suggested the first session of the next Parliament should meet before December. H.M. steamer Virago, from Napier, has arrived, to await the arrival of the Commodore in the Clio. Chbistchubch, July 5. A requisition is in course of signature to the Mayor of Christchurch, to call a public meeting for to-morrow night to support the Immigration and Public Works proposals of Government. It will be presented this evening.
