Mr Kynnersley, the candidate for Westland North, addressed the electors at tho Nelson Hotel, yesterday evening', a report of which will appear in our next issue. The meeting' was numerously attended, and Mr Kynnersley was well received. A vote of confidence was passed unanimously at the close of the proceedings. The monthly meeting of the Education Committee was held at the Court House, yesterday. Present: —Rev. W. D. R. Lewis, Messrs "Whyte, Field, Fleming, and Sheahan. Minutes of previous meeting having 1 been read and confirmed, the sub-committee, appointed to enquire as to the most suitable site for the erection of a school-house and dwelling, reported favorably of section 1, situated at the corner of Pakington and Palmerston streets. It was decided that the site should be applied to that purpose, and that the Central Board be communicated with relative to the matter ; also that plans and specifications be prepared, and tenders invited for the erection of buildings. We were misinformed with respect to the movements of the ketch Constant on Wednesday last. A gentleman, who arrived that evening from Charleston, stated that the above-named vessel had been unable to get into Constant Bay, owing to the very heavy sea, and had put out again. It appears, however, that the wind being favorable, she entered the heads—a matter of no little surprise to the residents there, as the weather was boisterous with a very heavy sea rolling. We are glad to learn that the little craft is none the worse for her buffeting about by the adverse weather during the past three weeks, and that she landed her cargo in perfect condition. We are given to understand that, since her arrival at Constant Bay, she narrowly escaped injury in consequence of the heavy drawback in the bay having swept the vessel from her moorings. Two Brighton gentlemen, Messrs Jackson and Kelly, left Westport yesterday for the Murray reef, Inangahua, which is at present exciting considerable attention both in Westland and these Goldfields. The line of reef is, we understand, identical with the Lyell, although about forty miles distant from" the latter township. Some excellent prospects have been obtained, and the initiated are of opinion that a really first-class reef has been discovered. We believe the exact locality of the reef is in the neighborhood of the old township of £onenfentsr and distant some eighteen miles from Christy's, at the junction of the Inangahua and Buller rivers. Although, in point of distance, very considerably nearer to Westport than Greymouth, the latter port is likely to monopolise the traffic, the largo quantities of stores and merchandise being conveyed up the Grey and Mawhera rivers for considerably less than half the rate charged by the Buller boats. We do not say the boatmen here are more renumoratively paid than their confreres of tb.9 Grey, as, we believe, the length of time that lapses before a large boat succeeds in completing her lading, reduces the earnings, even at the greatly increased rate of freight, belo v the Greymouth average. A lowering of prices would, however, give an impetus to trade, and result in a much larger quantity of freight from Westport. It does appear singular that, while possessing greater facilities for conducting the trade of the Upper Inangahua, that locality should be supplied from Greymouth, and, We believe, that it is chiefly owing to the small traffic, and consequently high rates that have prevailed hitherto for the carrying of goods.
Mr Kynnersley, in his address to the electors at Cobden, referred to his proposition to the Superintendent to act as Warden at Wangapeka and the Upper Bulletand to undertake the entire management of the goldfields, He proceeded to state that " the Provincial Council of Nelson rejected the proposal, and passed a resolution, on the motion of Mr Reid—' That the Superintendent be requested to inform Mr Kynnersley that the circumstances of the Province, and the conditions he proposed, precluded them from continuing him in his position.' The Council agreed to this motion, and three weeks afterwards it appeared that the circumstances of the Province had so much improved that they could vote ,£SOO for a Goldfields Secretary, and £4OO for another official. He saw by the Greg River Argus of that morning that Mr Reid had refused to become Goldiields Secretary, or to occupy any official capacity in the Executive, unless the power of such office emanated from the Superintendent, or was secured by the delegation of the Governor's powers, conjointly to the Superintendent and Executive, according to the Goldfields Act of 18G7. The Mr Reid, who proposed that resolution in the Council, was holding this office himself upon precisely the same terms as he proposed to the Superintendent. He was not finding fault with Mr Reid personally, because he believed that out of the whole of the members of the Council, that gentleman was best fitted to hold the position, and was not personally actuated by any wish to secure the office. He believed he only wished to keep other incompetent men out of it." The above statement, as reported, is liable to misapprehension. It was not on Mr Reid's motion that the appointment of Mr Kynnersley as Commissioner was negatived by the Council, but on the motion of Mr M'Mahon, and it was only when Mr Gibbs introduced a discourteous and insulting motion that Mr Reid substituted another, giving forciblo reason for the decision which had been arrived at by the Council. All the West Coast members voted for both motions.
On Thursday the high tide and very rough sea caused the latter again to overflow, but not to the extent that had been previously experienced. At the lower end of Gladstone-street the sea continues to encroach but with not nearly the rapidity of a few weeks back.
As much as £6O wore, we believe, collected by the Rev. E. Nolan in Charleston in aid of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Hawthorn, Victoria.
A miner, named Morgan, was taken to the Charleston Hospital on Wednesday, having broken his log by a fall of cement at Candlelight. Several accidents have
occurred lately in that district, there having been as many as five patients in the Hospital at one lime with fractured limbs.
The meetings of the Social Institute in Charleston, continue popular and are numerously attended. The election of officers of the Loyal Westport Lodge, Manchester Unity, took place at the lodge room on Thursday evening, resulting in the election of W. Bishop, N.G ; A. Ambrose, V.G.; and J. Casey, E.S. It is intended to hold the lodge meetings weekly in place of fortnightly as heretofore. At Charleston, on Wednesday evening, the following were elected officers of the Loyal Charleston Lodge for the ensuing term:—W. Forder, N.G.; Robert Flynn, V.G.; J. Allen, E.S.

In the Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday, there were no police cases. Johnston v. In the Warden's Court, yesterday, the application of Thomas and party, for two abandoned dams at Wilson's Lead, Addison's Flat, was granted. No other business was disposed of. The people of Ross, and the districts south of it, as far as Okarito, as we (Greymouth Star,) are informed, are about to memorialise for separation from Hokitika in order to be constituted a separate County. The movement is being instituted on the supposition that a portion of tbe million loan may thus be obtained.

As it is likely that, at this Session of the General Assembly, the mode of electing members will be discussed, it may be instructive to observe tliat the ballot was, in 1G37, in such favor among corporations, etc., that the " Lordes" had to prohibit its use in words and manner following:—" At the Court at Hampton Court, the 17th of September, 1G37. * * * His Matio, this daie sitting in Councell taking into consideracon the manifold inconveniences that may arise by the use of balleting boxes wch, is of late begun to be practised by some corporacons and companies, did declare his utter dislike thereof, and with the advice of their Lops, ordered that noe corporacon or company wth. in the eitie of London and Liberties or elsewhere wth. in this his Mats. Kingdom that use or pmitt to be used in any Business whatsoer any balleting boxe, as they tender his Mats, displeasure and will answere the contrary at their perill, " etc. The yield of gold of the Golden Crown claim, Auckland, is improving. For the week ended June 11th it amounted to 156 ozs. of retorted gold; the TJua Company's fortnightly crushing yielded 1750z5; thirteen tons from the City of Chester (late Earl Gold Mining Company) yielded 19ozs Isdwts fine gold; a three days' crushing of stone from the Success Company gave 30ozs of retorted gold; the Long Drive, for a fortnight's work, turned out 6920zs 3dwts ; the All -Nations had a crushing yielding 5770z5, and 70 tons of stone from the Golden Age yielded 90oz.
