The s.s. John Penn sailed for Hokitika and Greymouth on Monday night but had to put back on the morning of Tuesday, owing to the boisterous weather encountered off the Steeples, and having run short of coal. She arrived at Westpoat shortly before the Murray, received a supply of fuel from the latter vessel, and sailed for southern ports on Tuesday night. The s.s. Murray arrived at Westport from Greymouth on Tuesday last, having left the latter port on Monday night. She reports having encountered terrible weather. One sea all but swept the master off the bridge, and at one tine fears were entertained that the vessel would have to be beached for the safety of those on board. She succeeded, however, in reaching this port in safety, and sailed for Nelson yesterday morning at ten o'clock.

The s.s. Kennedy left Hokitika for Greymouth and Westport on Monday last, arrived at Greymouth and remained there till yesterday morning in consequence of the bad weather, when she left for Westport. We learn by telegram that she put back to Greymouth about noon, finding it impossible to proceed in the face of the boisterous northwesterly weather. A small craft, the Charlotte, from Kaiapoi laden with produce, arrived in the roadstead on Monday. Since her arrival the weather has been unfavorable for sailing vessels taking the bar. She put to sea yesterday shortly before the gale set in. Mr Martin, of the Circular Saw Steam Navigation Company, has threatened legal proceedings against the liquidators of the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company for selling the plant privately under £20,000, which, he said, he was ready to give. On the Wreck Recovery Company, who had previously purchased for £ 18,000, intimating their willingness to relinquish their bargain, the liquidators accepted Mr Martin's offer. It is said that he now refuses to complete the purchase.

The fires reported to have been seen on the captain of the Ann Duthie, seem to be accounted for by the following facts. The schooner Oreti arrived at Port Chalmers on March 3, 1870, from the Auckland Islands, having left the group on Feb. 23, 1870. The schooner had been on a whaling expedition, and had cruised about the Auckland Islands for three months. During that time the captain, Beatson, visited the various places at which stores had been left for castaways. This he did in consequence of having discovered certain human and other remains. Captain Gibson had an opportunity of examining Captain Beatson with reference to his cruise to the Auckland Islands, and the latter said he felt certain there was not a living person on the Islands at the time he left, Feb. 23, 1870. The fires which the captain of the Ann Duthie reports having seen on January 6 are likely to have been caused by the men belonging to the Oreti. It will be remembered that the Matoaka sailed from Lyttelton on May 13, 1869.
