The New Zealand Herald of May 28th, referring to the sugar" producing capabilities of the Sandwich Islands, says : —lt is some satisfaction that we have to notice an importation of sugars from Honolulu. We have not only seen the bulk, but also samples of finest descriptions sent here to report upon. So far as the sugars advertised for sale hy auction are concerned, they are remarkably strong, and contain more of the saccharine than the Mauritius sugars, and the same remarks apply to the samples referred to. It is a remarkable fact that until the return of the Wonga Wonga, we were not aware that within sixteen days' sail a market existed from whence we could draw supplies of sugar equal in quality and price to those of the Mauritius ; to what extent we are not yet informed, but it is important to know that we are no longer dependent upon the other colonies. If the Sandwich group can supply us with sugars, there may be other products at our disposal, such as rum and the fruits of the islands ; be this as it may, it might be desirable for one or more of our mercantile firms to test the matter by employing one of their travellers to visit Honolulu, and take stock of the trade going forward there, so as 1 o ascertain if there is any outlet for the goods imported into ihis market, or in other words, if it is possible to open up a trade.
