The Westport Times. SATURDAY, MAY 28, 1870.
As yet, the name of the successor to Mr Gallagher, as member of the General Assembly, is a matter of conjectm-e. It is generally believed that Mr Kynnersley is sure of the seat, if be is sincere in his intention to contestit, buthewill scarcely obtain it without a struggle. The names of each of the three members of the Provincial Council—O'Conor, Reid, and Donne—are mentioned, and although we have not the authority of any of those gentlemen for the statement, we believe that one or other will contest it, though not in opposition to each other. Mr Donne's success is considered less certain, so far as this district is concerned, than that of either of bis colleagues. In the event of neither of the two other provincial representatives coming forward, the name of Mr Luckie lias been mentioned as an eligible candidate and a hearty supporter of the miner. Mr Gallagher's resignation has been received by the Government, and the writ may be expected in a few days, when we hope one or other of our tried and so far successful local representatives in the Council will present himself for some further expression of confidence from the constituents.
It will be seen that the Superintendent, in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, has appointed Saturday the 11th of June at the Court-house at twelve o'clock, as the time, place, and hour, when the election of members of the local Education Committee will take place. The three retiring members this year are Messrs Franklyn, Munro, and Iteid. During part of the past twelve months this Committee was reduced to less than a required quorum, consequently its meetings were very irregular, indeed, for the greater part of that time, the entire duties devolved upon the two latter gentlemen. Since there was an addition to their number the Committee has only had one meeting, and the Sub-committee has neglected to visit the school as was arranged. Before or after the new appointments are made, the Committee should resolve upon visiting the school at least monthly. They should also make early enqiiiry as to obtaining a new school-house on the section held by the Board of Education, and arrange that regular monthly meetings should be held, at which a visiting committee should be appointed, as is done in the case of the Hospital Committee.
