The Westport Times. TUESDAY, MAY 17, 1870.

As will be seen by telegram appearing in another column, the inhabitants ot Grey mouth are renewing their efforts to obtain such alteration in the Southwest boundary of this province, as shall, include the Grey Valley workings in the County of Westland. The news to hand is not sufficiently definite to show the exact object it is sought to obtain, but it is likely that it takes the form of the prev.ous agitation—the creation of Greymouth into a separate county, bounded on the south by the Teremekau river and extending to Eazorback on the north. The grounds for this agitation are alleged by its promoters to be a misappropriation of the revenue of the County of Westland and neglect of the up-country districts drawing their supplies from Greymouth. The Colonial Government, as at present constituted, are uot we think, likely to pay much heed to the petition. Although strict advocates, so far as the existing provinces are concerned, of the principle of local government they are most inconsistently yet stoutly opposed to its further extension. They already poiut triumphantly to the embarrassments of Westland County, and the impoverished iinancial condition of Marlborough and Southland as sufficient ground for maintaining present boundaries, and we therefore do not think it likely that the Government will listen favorably to any proposal having for its object the further division of the existing provinces.
