PRISON LABOR.
{To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sie, —Will you kindly allow me to make known, through your valuable paper, a fact, which came under my notice, only this morning, and which I am informed is of common occurrence. It is simply that, while the business people of "Westport have to pay for any improvement to their property, such as the formation of roads, footpaths, &c. Mr M'Guire, Governor of "Westport Gaol, gets all his property cleared and improved by prison labor. I will further ask, sir, if such a thing is allowed by the authorities.—By inserting this, you will oblige yours &c, A Townsman. May 12,1870. [ln justice to Mr Maguire, we must inform our correspondent that no work has been done by the prisoners on any section belonging to the gaoler. On a section adjoining one held by him, some roots of trees were cut up this week, when the supply of firewood at the Government offices ran short, but the work has since been discontinued.]
