RESIDENT MAGISTRATE COURT.
Monday, May 9. (Before J. Giles, Esq., E.M.) Thomas Perkins and John "Webb, charged with drunkenness, were fined 10s each. OBSCENE AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. Ann Connolly, an old offender, was charged, on the information of Jane Lockyer, with using language calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. Complainant stated that about 8 o'clock on Friday morning, the 6th inst, she went to a Mrs Kent's to see a carpenter named Sibree whom she wanted to move a house for her. Defendant was there, and as soon as she saw her, commenced to use bad language, also followed her up the street, abusing complainant and throwing stones at her. The evidence of Sibree and Mrs Kent corroborated complainant's statement. Defendant made a statement to the effect that the charge had been made out of malice by the women Lockyer and Kent, and that she was a peaceful woman whose only fault was taking an occasional drop of beer. His worship considered the information substantiated and ordered defendant to enter upon her own recognizance of £SO and two sureties of £25 each to keep the peace for three months.
VAGRANCY. Ann Connolly and Jane Loekyer were charged, under the Vagrant Act with being disorderly persons having no lawful visible means of support. The evidence against the first-named accused was that she had never been known to do any work, and that improper characters had been in the habit of resorting to her dwelling. Four previous convictions were also put in. Similar evidence as regards drunkenness was also adduced against Jane Loekyer. His, Worship was of opinion that both characters were a nuisance to the neighborhood in which they resided, and it would be a relief to the community if both were imprisoned for three months. Should they be again brought before him, he should inflict as heavy a penalty as the law would permit. In the present he thought the charges had not been sufficiently made out, and the prisoners would be discharged.
