PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
CONSTEUCTTON OF ROAD TO LYELL EEEF. (BY ELECTBIG TELEGRAPH.) (from our own correspondents.) Nelson, Wednesday. The Provincial Secretary in reply to Mr A. Eeid's questions, promised that a road to the Lyell Eeef should be undertaken immediately. The Government will also encourage the establishing of a punt across the Buller at the Lyell. The purchase of the Orawaiti Bridge is declined. "Wellington, Wednesday. A fire took place last night in Cuba street, originating in a dwelling-house, the property of Mr Light. Nothing was saved. Premises in course of erection for Mr Bailie, photographer, were partially burned. All the property is insured. (west coast times.) Napier, A pril 28. Intelligenca was received last evening that ten men of Hapuruna's Hupu, Urewera tribe, came out of the bush and surrendered to Capt Mair. They state that Hauruna and his tribe —40 in number —are desirous of giving themselves up. It is believed their surrender will be accepted. This tribe has been hiding in Ahikereru. The Urewera men also state that To Kooti has only twenty men with him, and is at Waioeke Gorge (Opotiki), living on fern roots and honey. Wellington, April 28. The Taranaki was placed alongside the hulk to-day to coal. Her trial trip will be made on Saturday. Next week she goes south, under the command of Captain Holmes White. The authorities refuse the Taranaki a pas-senger-carrying certificate till her bottom has been inspected in dock. The Wellington is undergoing repairs. Bishop Abrahams, of Wellington, has accepted the office of chaplain and coadjutor Bishop to the Bishop of Litchfield, and consequently will not return to the Colony.
