This morning a prisoner named August Schroder, a seaman of the Melita, undergoing a sentence of three months for assaulting the police, was shot dead while engaged with the hardlabor gang, by the overseer, named M'Carthy, whose rifle accidentally went off. The bullet passed through SchroderVheart. An inquest is being held. The new Steam Company here is formiug satisfactorily. Reports from Auckland state that the Maori King has offered Te Kooti an asylum at Tokangamutu. Ciibistcueiich, April IS Mr Moorhouse addressed 1500 people in Barnard's Eepository on Saturday evening. The show of hands was about equal for and against him. A volunteer encampment was held on Saturday, yesterday, and to-day. The muster of volunteers was not numerous.
