According to a return furnished by the Collector of Customs to the Provincial Government, the amount of customs revenue collected at the port of Westport during the year ended 31st March was as follows : £ s. d. Spirits 10,017 15 2 Tobacco 2,387 12 6 Cigars 579 10 6 Fixed duties 5,102 2 7 Duties by measurement 1,701 8 1 Duties by weight ... 748 16 8 Gold duty, Nelson Province 10,312 3 3 Total .£31,449 15 3 This return does not include the various fees received under the Arms Act, Merchant Shipping Act, and other Acts. During the quarter ended March 31st, there were 22,0840zs I6dwt 12grs of gold, of the value of £89,519 IPs 9d, exported from Westport. The town of Timaru seems to be sharing in the two general depression of commercial credit. During the past month, there have been five failures, while rumors affecting the credit of one or two firms are current.
BIRTH. At Kennedy street, West port, on the Ist April, the wife of Mr H. Christensen, of a son. DEATHS. At Auckland, on the 6th March, of heart disease, Robert Louttit, fifth son of James Louttit, Esq., Wick, Caithness, deeply regretted. At his father's residence, on the 11th Afu;reh, after a long and painful illness, John Charles Mason, late of Greymouth, aged 28 years, the beloved son of John Mason, 226 Little Collins street east, Melbourne.
