Star of the South arrived here from Auckland, via Tauranga. At the latter place she landed Colonels Moule and Lyons, who went to investigate the cause of Lieutenant-Colonel Eraser's arrest by Colonel M'Donnell. On their arrival, melancholy to relate, they found that Fraser had died two days before from fever. Te Kooti made a raid on a native settlement, Opape, near Opitiki, on the 7th instant, and took a number of women aud children prisoners. A few men were killed, amongst whom was the only son of "William Marsh, Arawa chief. The women and children belonged to the Wahakatotea hapu. Some women have escaped, and report that Te Kooti killed between twenty and thirty women and children. He has kept only the young women alive, and with these he has retreated into the ranges. Major Kemp (Native) and the chief Topia are in hot pursuit. The Arawas are furious at Marsh's loss. "Wellington, March 16. The Government have received a private telegram to the effect that Te Kooti has appeared in the neighborhood of Tauranga. Nelson, March 17. A new reef has been discovered at "Wangapeka, half-a-mile north of ford's. It was rushed by candlelight by about eighty men early on Tuesday morning. The gold has been struck, and the prospects are good. Christchurch, March 18. There was a smart shock of earthquake last night at 11.28. The direction was from N.E. to S.W. No damage done.
