CHARLESTON.
(fkom oub own cobrespondent.) March 18. A ball and banquet, held under the auspices oftho Hibernian Society, took place' at Carr's Oddfellows' Hotel on Thursday night. The tables were laid for 200, but about 100 ladies and gentlemen sat down. The repast was good. The chair was filled by Mr Michael Bohan, president of the society, who was supported by Mr E. J. Conor, M.P.C., and Mr Donne, M.P.C. The vice chair was occupied by Mr M'Grath. After the viands had been partaken of, a number of toasts followed in quick succession—- " Our Native Land," responded to by Mr Dempsoy in an eloquent speech; " The Day we Commemorate," appropriately responded to by Mr O'Conor; "The Ballarat Hibernian Society," responded to by Mr M'Parland ; " The Mining and Commercial Interests," responded to by Mr Donne; " Our Visitors," coupled with the name of Mr O'Conor and Mr Donne, responded to by those gentlemen ; " The Charleston Press," responded to by Mr Gray Spencer; and " The Ladies," responded to by Mr Donne. About 12 o'clock the company retired to the ball-room at Behan's Hibernian Hotel, where dancing was kept up until early the following morning. An accident of a somewhat serious nature, whereby a miner named William Dwyer had his leg broken, occurred at the Four-Mile yesterday. A number of men were working in a " face" of cement when a quantity fell, partially burying three men, two of whom escaped without injury. The injured one was at once conveyed to the hospital, where he will, of course, receive all necessary attention.
