Charles Edward, which arrived in the Buller at half-past live yesterday morning, left Manukau at G p.m. on Saturday, called at Taranaki at 8 a.m. on Sunday, left at 9 a.m., arrived at Nelson at 1 a.m. on monday, and loft at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Had light winds and fine weather throughout the passage. She leaves for Manukau on Saturday. The steamers John Penn and Wallabi arrived yesterday morning, both with cargoes of cattle from Wangauui. The John Penn proceeds south, and will then make her usual trip to Nelson and Manukau. The s.s. Kennedy arrived yesterday afternoon, and sailed for the south during the same tide. She returns to sail for Nelson to-morrow morning.

The John Peim left Westport on Saturday last at 4 o'clock p.m. and arrived alongside the Wanganui wharf the following afternoon at 3.30, making a smart run of 23£ hours from wharf to wharf. Shipped a full cargo of stock on Monday a7id sailed for the West Coast on Tuesday at 5 o'clock a.m., arrivinS in Westport on Wednesday morning at 6.30. Captain Carry reports fine weather throughout the voyage. By the Merchant Shipping Act Adoption Act, 1869, all masters of vessels over 50 tons register will, after the Ist of January, 1870, hare to enter into articles of agreement, with their crew. All men engaged after that date will have to produce certificates of discharge permits to ship. The Flying Squadron will probably arrive in Wellington about the middle of January. The squadron consists of six vessels, and the number of men on board is something about 3000 ; the number of officers belonging to the ships is 112, but there are also a large number of supernumeraries. The Challenger, Blanche, and Rosario will probablv be in harbor along with the ships of the squadron. The s.s. Taranaki is to be refitted and put in sea-going order at. Wellington.
