We are requested to remind " capitalists, speculators, and others," that at three o'clock this afternoon Messrs Robertson and Co. will sell, at the Post Office Hotel, the ground for the grand stand, booths, &c, to be used during the ensuing races on the Orawaiti Racecourse.
Several properties have, within the past week, been offered for sale by public auction, but in no case have the expectations of the sellers been realised. Perhaps their expectations were elevated by the probabilities of a demand for house property after the fire. The Clarendon Hotel, at the corner of Kennedy and Molesworth streets, was one of the properties withdrawn, but it has since been privately purchased from Mr Sloan by Mr Gilmer, of the Post Office Hotel, with which it is to be temporarily conjoined.
Giles Terrace, which promises to prove one of the best mining localities on the West Coast, is not yet by any means exhausted. Cowon and party, we understand, are commencing to tunnel from the sea front of the terrace, north of M'Master and party, and start with good hope, though they have to drive a distance of 2000 feet
The trial of John Smyth, of Lyttelton, charged with the brutal murder of his wife, Georgina Renton Smyth, was concluded on Saturday week, and residted in the accused being found guilty of murder. The prisoner was most ably defended by Mr Wynn Williams; but the facts proved the most horrible treatment of the unfortunate deceased, without the least palliation whatever. Smyth was sentenced to be hanged, without the slightest hope of mercy.
Lately there has been some excitement in Hokitika with regard to the reduction of the mail service with Cfaristchurch. We now learn that there is every prospect of the bi-weekly overland mail between Hokitika and Christchureh being continued, the General Government having consented to negotiations on the subject being re-opened, supposing the total cost of the service does not exceed the amount voted by the General Assembly.
