The steamer John Penn arrived in port on Thursday morning, with several passengers from Hokitika and Greymouth, chiefly'women and children, bound for Auckland. The John Penn docs not sail until to-day, having been detained for the arrival from Charleston of the prisoners and witnesses connected with the case of alleged manslaughter to be tried in the Supreme Coiu-t, Nelson. The s.s. Murray came direct from Hokitika. without calling at Greymouth, and sailed for Nelson yesterday afternoon. The schooner Storm Bird has been stranded at Hokitika, while being towed in by the lioness. Her cargo has been saved. The first concrete block of the new harbor •works at Timaru was laid last week. The brig Ellen has arrived at Nelson from Newcastle. On the passage, one of the seamen was washed overboard and washed on board again, with his arm broken. Ou the 22nd instant, a seaman named Robt. Martin feU from the mast of the cutter Satellite, while lying at Tonga Islands, and sustained severe injuries. The man was brought on to Nelson by Captain Charles of the schooner Sisters, and placed in the hospital.
