QUARTZ-REEFS AT COLLINGWOOD.

It has already been mentioned that some auriferous quartz had been found at Collingwood. The particulars are contained in the following letter, received by Mr John Jervis, Nelson, from Mr Thomas Snow, one of an exploring party assisted by Mr Jervis : " I am pleased in having to inform you that we have been successful in finding a defined reef, cropping out of Bedstead Gully, and have traced the same fully half a mile towards Lightband's Gully. In the cap of the reef we have found gold as per specimens, forwarded in the care of Mr Davenport. We also found a second reef, about a hundred yards east of the first, the cap of which is a black cement, a piece of which I have sent. I crushed a piece about the same size and washed it; the result I have enclosed in paper. The first reef shows a face six feet in width, and about ten feet in height on the extreme point of the spur. We put in a cutting about fifty feet back in the spur from where it cropped out, and came upon the solid reef. The second reef was pointed out to us by Jack Allan, on condition that he would be allowed a share in the same with us, which I promised, and trust that you will not find fault with me in so doing. "There will be no difficulty whatever in getting machinery on the ground, as it is within three-fourths of a mile from the dray road to Golden Gully." The samples received by Mr Jervis, says the Nelson Colonist, consist of dark brown colored and somewhat heavy cement, and pieces of dull leaden colored quartz, apparently tinged with some material like plumbago. Though no gold is visaible to the naked eye in the cement, which forms the cap of the reef, yet ou being crushed and washed a very ample return of gold was shown. The party, in conjunction with Mr Jervis and others who sent them out, have secured a mining lease of 16\ acres. Several other parties assert that they have found reefs, and Collingwood i 3 " looking up."
