QUARTZ FROM CASCADE CREEK.

Some very fine specimens of quartz have been left at this office by a miner named Horcules Brinkley, which were obtained by him and his mates, two Italians, at Cascade Creek, about ten miles up the Buller Eiver. About two weeks ago we made mention of a specimen taken to town by the surveyors, and obtained by them from a boulder in the same creek. It appears that Brinkley, on seeing the specimens to which we then alluded, formed a small party and proceeded up the river with the view of testing the neighborhood. They went up the Buller a distance of ten miles in a canoe, and walked up the left hand branch of Cascade Creek for a distance of two miles, when they came upon a reef cropping out in the bank of the creek. Three specimens have been left with us, and several others have been handed to Mr Martin, storekeeper. Brinkley is desirous of getting two or three more mates, and obtaining an equipment of provisions and tools and returning to the ground to procure a ton or two of the stone and thereafter to have it tested. Whether the stone is gold bearing, or whether the numerous bright specs which are visible in it are merely mundic or arsenical pyrites, it is difficult at present to say. The stone much resembles that brought from the Waimagoroa reef. The supposed leader from which the specimens were obtained is eighteen inches thick. Brinkley is prepared to go up again and show the ground to any one who may be willing to assist the party in furthering the prospecting of the reef.
