FATAL ASSAULT AT HOKITIKA.

MAN SWEPT OUT TO SEA. NEW DIGGINGS. GEEAT FLOODS AT WELLINGTON. MOVEMENTS OF TE KOOTI. THE KAIMABAWA GOLDFIELD. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.)

CFROiI OUR OWJf CORRESPONDENTS.) Hokitika. Tuesday. Margaret M'Bride died this morning from the effects of an assault alleged to have been committed by a man named James Gulliver, who is now in custody. An inquest is to be held tomorrow. Manuel Argevedo, a Portuguese gardener, was swept out to sea this morning while crossing the river during a heavy fresh. His body has not been found. There is a new rush ten miles up the river Arahura. The prospects are ldwt. to the dish, and there is believed to be an extensive area of ground. At the Woodstock rush fifty holes have been sunk, and are expected to be bottomed next week. The Big Paddock rush is turning out well. The principal drawback is the presence of largo and thick timber. Wellington, Wednesday. Great floods have happened at the Hutt—the heaviest for eleven years. A large amount of property has been destroyed. The latest from the Front is that Te Kooti has returned to the scene of the late engagement, and exhumed and removed the bodies of those killed. He is now entrenching himself with a hundred followers, and has sent the women and children away, which looks like a determination to fight it out. No reefs have yet been found at Kaimarawa. All the specimens have been got in creeks within the Province of Auckland. Prospecting is actively proceeding.
