THE SUPERINTENDENCY OF NELSON.

The meeting addressed bv Mr Gibbs on Friday evening was well attended. Mr Pitt was in the chair. It was our intention to have printed, in a supplement, a report of Mr Gibbs's speech, but the meeting did not, either by the amount of disputation or of fun, attain sufficient importance to justify that being done; and we do not give a report ol the meeting even to-day, for the simple reason that our reporter has "jibbed " in the work of extending his notes. His plea is indisposition, and we believe it is a perfectly justifiable plea, for he has been working very hard lately. At the conclusion of the meeting it was unanimously carried that Mr Gibbs was a fit and proper person to be Superintendent of the Province. This was proposed by Mr Alcorn, and seconded by MrHumphrey. On Saturday Mr Gibbs visited the Caledonian Terrace, and in the afternoon he proceeded to Charleston, where he held a meeting in the even-

ing. Of the result of that meeting we have the following telegram :—" Gibbs had good meeting on Saturday. Unanimously carried that he was a fit and proper person. Home proposed a counter resolution, but it was negatived."

With regard to the prospects of the election in Nelson the following telegram has been received. It is addressed to an elector here by a trustworthy Nelsonite who is, at "least, not an avowed partizan : " 1 have seen members of Gibbs's committee, and gone through a good part of the country myself, especially since the Wangapeka discovery, and can testify to the feeling being stronger for Gibbs, who has character, honesty, respectability, and staunchness in the Council. Akersten's statements are quite untrue —like more he has made. The following figures, intentionally kept under the mark, show reliable pledges for Gibbs: —Nelson 120, Suburbs 40, Richmond 70, Waimea West 40, Spring Grove and Waimea South 80, Moutere 60, Motueka 35, Kiwaka 30, Golden Bay 100. At the last election only eleven hundred polled for the two candidates. Not more are are expected to poll now, as many in town stand aloof. E , who formerly supported Akersten, has thrown him over, and says he will vote for Curtis. Akersten is losing ground in both town and country. He had a poor meeting at Eichmond last night." Another Nelson correspondent writes to one of Mr Akersten's friends here :

" Having been round to most of the undermentioned places, and seen the electors personally, I can vouch for the following as the probable support of Mr Gibbs :—Nelson 120, Waimea East 70, Waimea South 80, Waimea West 45, Moutere 60, Motueka 35, Suburbs 30, Riwaka 40, Golden Bay 100 ; total 580. I think that we have got the majority of the electors in the settled districts, but Mr Curtis may have the majority in the town, and Akersten will have a mere nothing in the country districts." A public meeting was held last evening, at the Masonic Hall, for the purpose of endeavoring to achieve unanimity of action in the election. The hall was crowded. Several resolutions and amendments were proposed. A report of the proceedings will be given in our next issue. The meeting resulted in the appointment of a committee (consisting of Messrs Alcorn, Whyte, Munro, Simpson, Powell, Reid, Sheahan, Field, and the mover Mr o'Conor,) to carry out the object desired.
