THE SUPERINTENDENCY.
PUBLIC MEETING-. A meeting, latterly well-attended, was held in the Masonic Hall last evening. Its advertised object was " to secure unanimous and concerted action at the approaching election of Superintendent." Mr Alcorn was called to the chair. Our space is unfortunately so largely pre-occupied that in this number we e.m only state the results. Mr O'Cokoh, as a promoter of the meeting, explained the object and its desirability. Mr Robert Whyte moved:— " That it is desirable that the Electors of Westport appointa committee to communicate on their behalf with the surrounding districts, that all the votes recorded On the Nelson South-West Goldfleld, at the coming election for the Superintendeney, may be in support of that candidate \Ao may be chosen as most likely to forward our long neglected district." Mr O'Coxor seconded the motion pro forma. Mr Sttnley proposed:— "That no such committee be appointed, but that the free and independent electors be left to their own choice." The motion was not seconded. Mr Muxro desiderated definiteness. He moved:— " That a Committee be appointed to act in concert with the Committee at Charleston for the return of Mr Akersten as Superintendent." Mr Smyrk seconded the amendment. There was a motion of adjournment, which was not seconded. Amid some confusion and hilarity, the amendment and motion were put. The amendment was lost, and the original motion carried. There were cries for a division, when a vote of thanks was proposed to the Chairman, and he retired. Mr O'Conor was called to the chair, and a committee was nominated, but Mr Miunro moved an adjournment, and it was carried.
