TO ALEXANDER REID, ESQ. DEAE SIR, —The dissolution of the Provincial Council necessitates the Election of two Members for this District. We the undersigned therefore desire that you will permit yourself to be nominated for one of the seats. The opportunities of gaining general experience which foreign travel has afforded you—your long residence in other Provinces of New Zealand—and the peculiar and extensive mean 3 you have possessed, through your connection with the Press, of becoming acquainted with the wants of this community—all conspire to point you out as eminently qualified to fill the office in question honorably to yourself and with special benefit to the district. Trusting you will accede to our request, and promising our best exertions to secure your return, "We remain, Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, James W. To J. W. Humphrey, J. Southeb-v, W. J. Patteesox, W. Pitt, Esqjls,, and the other Gentlemen signing the Requisition. GENTLEMEN, —Tou honor me much by presenting me with such a requisition, so numerously signed. Thus honored by you, lam naturally gratified. It would gratify me more could I feel that I were more worthy of your confidence, or in any respect so worthy as many whom you might select to share the representation of the interests of the Buller district in the Nelson Council. It is your misfortune, however, that where there exist the qualifications you require, there exists also the modesty of merit, or there does not exist sufficient freedom from business engagements to permit of those qualified residing in Nelson during the period in which the Council is in session. It is my misfortune to fail in even the merit of modesty; and, having regard also for these circumstances, I hesitate less as to the answer I should give. While heartily thanking you, I as heartily comply with your wishes. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Tour most obedient servant, ALEXANDER REID. j
