Recently the western channel at the mouth of the Buller river lias become more open and navigable. There is now a foot more water in it than there is in the north channel. The last soundings gave thirteen feet of water, but the depth, of course, depends upon the state of the tides. The recent spring tides afforded the Harbor Master, Captain Leech, a better opportunity than usual of inspecting the snag which has apparently become a fixture on the Buller bar.. They also enabled him to place upon the snag an iron beacon, stayed by chains. The beacon is 22 feet high, showing 11 feet above water. The snag is surrounded by a sand-bank situated between tlie two channels. The s.s. Murray returned to Nelson from Manukau on Sunday, and may be expected here to-day or to-morrow. The Charles Edward, which started in company with the John Pcnn, arrived in Kelson after a sixteen hours' passage, 2\ hours in advance of the Reun. She is appointed to sail hence for the Manukau ou Friday. The steamer Beautiful Star is now on her way from Dunedin to Westport, calling sit intermediate ports.
