The brigantine Mary, from Melbourne, arrived off the Boiler bar on Saturday, the 25th, and was towed into port yesterday afternoon by the steamer Lioness, which came up for the purpose from Hokitika. On entering the river, the vessel got out of the fairway, and "hung" for some time, hut n"t in a position of great danger, and the Lioness succeeded after slight manoeuvring in towing her safely up lo Bright strict wharf. The Mary left Melbourne on the Kith inst., and experienced light weather throughout the passage.
The steamer Murray, which arrived and sailed on Saturday, will return from Nelson this week, and. after vis't'ng Hokitika and Oreymouth, will be despatched for Manukau direct. By proceeding direct to Manukau without calling at Nelson, a saving of two days will be effected in the length of the passage, and that will, no doubt, be a recommendation to many to whom time is money or to whom the s;a is sickness. The steamer Charles Edward sailed for Nelson at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, and made a fine trip of less than seventeen hours. She is bound for the Minukau, but from none of the West Coast ports did she take many passengers, t lie John I'enn having apparently accommodated the "exodus" for the present.
A sailor named John Curliss has been charged at tho Nelson Police Court with stealing from Farewell sand spit the cutter Sandfly, and committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. He was left on board the cutter by the master, and, as the master had refused to give him his discharge, lie stt s lil with h r for the l'elorus.
The TTci'! Coast Timet having received a communication from Messrs Button and Keid, barristers, relative to a paragraph published in that journal calling Captain M'Gillvray anything but a seaman, and visiting the sins of the lloki'ika bar upon that gentleman, have since published an apology, stating that the) had been led astray in the remarks that they had made. A lady has heen unanimously elected a member of a yachting club. She is the owner of a fine vessel of over 240 tons, and intends to enter for most of the prizes this year. We (Court Journal) hope no gentleman will be ungal'.ant enough to try and beat her, and will turn out of the course altogether when they sec her in her stays or hanging out her sheets. A recent Gazelle contains this harbor regulation :—-The master of every vessel shall anchor or moor where the Harbor Master or person deputed by him may direct; and ho shall not unmoor or quit the anchorage, nor shall he haul his vessel alongside any public pier, wharf, or jetty, without having previously obtained permission from the Harbor Master or deputy to do so ; and any master offending against this regulation shall be liable to a penalty iiot exceeding £5.
