WESTPORT JOCKEY CLUB.
Definite steps were taken on Tuesday evening, at a meeting held at the Post Office Hotel, for the formation of a Westport Jockey Club. A meeting had been held previously, when a committee was appointed to canvass for members, and a report was brought in by that committee on Tuesday evening, showing that over forty members had joined, most of whom had paid the membership fee. It was proposed by Mr Freeth, and carried, that the list of members of the Club should be closed, and that any new members should be nominated and ballottedfor, according to the terms of the Nelson Turf Club Rules. The rules of the Nelson Turf Club, with such modifications as might be made by a sub-committee appointed for the purpose of revising these rules, are to be adopted, and each member of the Club is to be provided with a copy of the rules for the guidance of future meetings. It was carried that all subscriptions should be paid up on the Ist of November, and that the first annual meeting should be held on the first Tuesday of November, when the election of stewards for the year will take place, and such other business as may then be deemed necessary for the proper carrying out of the annual Christmas races. Mr Freeth was appointed treasurer to the Club, and Mr Bullen secretary. A standing committee was then appointed for revising the rules, and otherwise modelling the Club prior to its first annual meeting; this committee consisting of Messrs Harris, Munday, Watson, Reid, Freeth, Jones, Milne, Trimble, and Emanuel, with power to add to their number. The result of the meeting favors the probability of a belter racemeeting at Christmas than has hitherto been witnessed in this district.
