PHRENOLOGY AND INSANITY.
CTo the Editor of the Wesfport Times.) Sin, —I observed your editorial remarks on the subject of phrenology, &c, in your issue of the 9th instant. You say you fail to see the remarkable value of phrenology in connection with such a case as that to which I referred—a case of suicide. It is allowed to be of the utmost importance to know the phrenological development of the brain of persons taken ill with such a malady as insanity. Therefore we want some natural index
to the mind, so that we may inquire into the cause which prompts men, while in that state, to suicide. Phrenology is admitted to be one of the best methods known of accounting for those fact is a credible manner. "Disease in the organs is the cause of insanity." " Deficiency in size is also another sign." Those statements have been proved beyond the " shadow of a doubt." Therefore it stands to reason that an able phrenologist, in contemplating these organs operating in excess, or in a state of disease, obtains light on this subject which other persons cannot reach. Of course phrenology does not foretell the actions of men, but it can make known the power of mind possessed by them ; allowing always, however, for health temperament, and education.—l am, &cv, Phrenologist. Charleston.
