The Westport Times. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1869.
The steamer with the English Mail Las reached Jlokitika this month three uays earlier than the date upon which it is legitimately due. Such news as has been brought, and has been telegraphed thither, appears in other columns. Such news! By the exclamation we imagine we anticipate the sentiments of most of our readers, who may well wonder if it is not possible for the Government to supply to the Press what the Press is quite willing to pay for—a coherent and consecutive compilation of the month's intelligence. It may be too early to expect as yet any good result to arise, in such a matter of detail, from the appointment of Mr Vogel as the Head of the Department, but we shall expect that, in this particular, as in others, bis professional knowledge and practical appreciation of public requirements will soon enable and encourage him to effect what will be at once a change and an improvement.
