CHARLESTON.
(from: our OWN CORRESPONDENT.) August 25. Yesterday afternoon, as two men were engaged filling a wheelbarrow with stuff for the repair of the road near Candlelight, an accident of a serious nature occurred to one of them named William Paice. A quantity of earth fell, striking and breaking the shovel in use by his mate, and breaking the thigh of Paice. He was at once conveyed to the hospital. Another patient was admitted to the hospital at 5 a.m. this day, sufferiny from the effects of an accident in the claim of Mace and Greenwood at the Four Mile. The unfortunate man, I understand, was endeavoring to extricate some foreign substance from underneath the stampers, under the belief that the machine was stopped, but, such not being the case, the stamper descended on his hand, smashing one of his fingers to such an extent that amputation was deemed necessary, the operation being performed this morning by Dr Bruen. The change in the weather has enabled the trade of the port to be resumed. No fewer than four vessels arrived on Saturday last, one on Sunday, and one yesterday. Mr John Pasco and Co. have purchased the Mary Ann, as she lies on the beach.
