COMMERCIAL.
Westpokt Times Office, Friday Evening. There has been nothing unusually brisk in business transactions during the week, but up-country demands continue much the same. The arrival of the Maid of Erin and Beautiful Star, so soon after the Nightingale, has made stocks of general merchandise plentiful; but as none of the goods have been forced on the market, prices remain unaltered. We also note the arrival of several cargoes of produce, more particularly of potatoes, which may now be said to be a drug in the market. Flour and oats remain firm at our last quotations. There is no change in sugars, and, as stocks ;ive light, we do not anticipate any further decline until the arrival of next vessel from Melbourne. In wines and sprits there is little doing. We hear of some inquiries for rum, for which wc quote 21s, d.p. At auction sales during the week little disposition has been shown by the trade to purchase, and few sales have been effected.
