Gretmotjth, Tuesday. The s.s. Omeo arrived at the Bluff on Monday. She left Melbourne on the 10th instant. Melbourne, August 3 to 10. A very disastrous fire has occurred at Carleton, North Melbourne— Messrs. Tronton's large warehouse and fifteen houses have been destroyed. Mr Moore, the fruiterer in Collinsstreet, was accidently killed by a cab collison. Kinneally, one of the pardoned Fenian convicts refused to leave the Colony of Victoria, and has been arrested. The s.s. Great Britain is reported to have reached Liverpool. She arrived on the 2nd July, after a smart passage of 57 days, being the fastest passage she has yet recorded between Melbourne and Liverpool. Captain Sturt, the well-known explorer has died. The Velocipede mania is attaining a great height all through the Colony, and velocipede riding schools are being established in Melbourne, and are largely attended. Sydney, August 3 to 10. A diamond weighing half-a-pound has been found, at Armidale, New South "Wales.
Mr Marks, Magistrate, Goulbourne, has committed suicide. Mr Clarke, proprietor of the Varieties Concert Hall in Sydney, has been committed for trial, for the murder of his wife. M'Kinlay, who has been recently charged with fraudulent insolvency has become insane. A barmaid at the Kent Hotel, Sydney, named Eliza Pane, poisoned herself this week. A severe gale has been reported as having taken place at Norfolk Island, by which the ship Zephyr and others have been destroyed. Later American news has been received by way of Sydney. The Cuban filibustering expedition has been repulsed with sixty killed. Cholera is reported to be raging at Cuba, and no less than two thousand soldiers have died. Small pox rages at Panama. Queensland, August 6. Mr Rankin, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Rockhampton, has shot Mr Rea, auctioneer, of the same place. He fired three shots before accomplishing his object. The reason attributed is jealousy. Several large nuggets have been found lately on the Queensland diggings. Wellington, Wednesday. In the House of Representatives the amendments made by the Legislative Council on the Summary Trials Bill were accepted after some opposition. The Law and Justice Estimates have been passed with only one alteration. The session is not likely to be over for three weeks yet. The mining news from Auckland is reported as less favorable than has been circulated during the past few months, and many of the shares in mining companies have fallen considerably. A letter from the Thames natives has been published, in which they express themselves as strongly objecting to the Government appropriating the sea beach and other portions of their territory.
