"Winter, the County Treasurer, attempted to abscond this morning in a schooner which was leaving the port. Through the inquiry now being made by the agent of tho General Government, defalcations to a large extent have been discovered. The prisoner has confessed having embezzled the public funds to the extent of £2500, but tho actual deficiency is said to be £IO,OOO. Browne, the detective, arrested Winter on board the schooner without a warrant. He is now in the lock-up. E. W. Jones, the late Curator of Intestate Estates, was committed for trial yesterday. He has since been released oa bail. Several other charges arc pending against him.

A warm debate took place in the House to-day, on a motion of Stafford's for papers explaining the alleged unauthorised expenditure of the late Government, referred to in the financial statement. Mr Stevens declared the figures quoted by the Treasurer to be either a gigantic blunder, or something worse, for which he was soundly abused by Messrs Bell and Fox. The Government had to admit that a sum of £170,000 should not, according to former precedents, have been charged against the year, being the amount remitted home to meet interest on loans, but they disclaimed all intention to mislead in the matter.
