CHARLESTON.
(FROM OTTE OWN COBEESPOJfDENT.) August 3. The cutter Mavis, from Lyttelton, with a cargo of produce, came iuto harbor on Monday. She is consigned to Messrs Dwau and Co. Early on Tuesday morning a very heavy surf began to roll home, and soon began to cause a little commotion in the bay. The vessels in harbor stood the additional strain for some time, until an unusually heavy sea came rolling in, causing all three vessels to part their moorings, and driving the Mary Jane on to the rocks, where she carried away her sternpost and rudder. The Mavis also lost her rudder, by beinij severely bumped on the beach. The Constant escaped without injury, but was sent well up the beach. Steps were immediately taken to remove the Constant and Mavis, and steadying lines were got out from the Mary Jane, but she still remains in uncomfortable proximity to the rocks. Application has been made by the Charleston Fire Brigade Committee to the Government for the grant of £IOO and, as soon as that amount is to their credit in the Bank, they intend to call in all subscriptions, and hold a public meeting for the purpose of enrolling members and laying before the public a fair account of their proceeding. In the meantime they have com. municated with several leading houses in different parts of the Colony, as to the cost of engine, gear, &c. The amount of subscriptions will be about £l5O. A Sunday-school will be opened on Sunday next, at St. Mark's Church, when, as our worthy pastor remarked on Sunday last, it is to bo hoped there will be a good attendance. Two sermons will be given by Mr Flavell on Sunday next, in reference to the Sunday-school.
