THE LATE FATAL ACCIDENT AT ADDISON'S.
The namo of the unfortunate man who lost his life at Addison's Flat on Monday evening was at first incorrectly reported. His name, it appears, was Frederick Donovan. On Tuesday his body was brought to Westport; an inquest was held at Grady's Emerald Isle Hotel ; and his funeral, which took place immediately afterwards, was attended by a very large number of friends of the deceased, and miners from Addison's Flat and the Shamrock Lead. The following was the evidence taken at the inquest, which was held by the District Coroner, Dr Giles : William -Tones: lam a miner at Addison's Flat. I know the deceased. He was about thirty years old, and came from County Cork, Ireland. I was a mate of his. Yesterday afternoon, about two o'clock, I was underground, in the claim at Addison's. The deceased was also underground, on the opposite side of the main drive. \V r e heard the ground fall in, and ran to the main drive. We found the earth had fallen in where the deceased was working, about "one set" from the main drive. All hands set to work, and dug the deceased out. He was then dead. It was about two hours after the earth had fallen in. The deceased was taking out the ground. There was about 36 feet taken out. The ground was well timbered. Several tons fell in. I cannot assign any particular cause for the earth falling in. Thomas Broggy: I was working with the deceased. Ho was about to drive the lathes home, and I was gong to drive out the sand in the truck, when I heard the timbers crack. I called out" Run," and ran myself to the main drive. I scarcely got out myself before the earth came down. The deceased never spoke. He was quite dead when dug out. John Maroney gave corroborative evidence, and stated he believed the deceased was unmarried. Dr Thorpe described the injuries to which lie attributed the death of the deceased. The jury returned a verdict of " Accidental Death."
