THE WALKATO. TE KOOTI still THREATENING. FIRE AND LOSS OF LIFE IN AUCKLAND. By the s.s. Wallabi we have a copy of an extra edition of the Wanganui Chronicle, printed on Saturday, and containing the following information : By the s.s. Ahuriri which arrived at an early hour this morning we have received Auckland papers to Thursday, and later intelligence till that afternoon. The latest intelligence respecting movements of Te Kooti is contained iu a telegram received from the Waikato, and which was to the effect that Te Kooti had gone on to the Mokau with 300 men. The following telegram reached the Cross, at half-past 11 o'clock on the night of July 2S : Te Awamutu, July 23, 10 p.m. Te Kooti left Te Kuiti on Monday, proceeding on the road to Mokau. The chief Reihana proposed to Tawhiao to pursue Te Kooti and drive him to Taupo. Tawhiao, however, refused to accede to that course. The Ngatimaniapoto determined not to stop their district against Te Kooti. Manga (Rewi) is reported to be mad. A fire occurred on Thursday morning, about five o'clock, in a house in Cook-street, Auckland, owned and occupied by Mr James Cameron. Two adjoining cottages, which were much endangered, were fortuuately saved. The owner of the tenement, Cameron, (ho foreuum at the Herald office, was burnt to death. The fact was not known on the night of the fire, but the charred remains were found next morning. The arms and legs were quite burnt away, and the head was frightfully mutilated. He leaves a wife and five childreu, who are at the Kaipara.
