Tho polling was—Birch, 568; Fish, 514; Dods,74; Miller, 38. There was great excitement. The criminal information by Mr Henry Driver against the Echo newspaper is now being heard. Chkvstciiui:ch, Friday. Shares to the value of one thousand pounds have been taken in the Grold Prospecting Association. The Committee have issued a report approving of four prospecting parties of three men each, to be employed under a mining manager; each party to be provided with the necessary equipments ; each man to receive provisions, and twenty-five shillings weekly. In case gold bearing reefs or auriferous claims are found, the discovering party with its mining manager to have one-fourth share of the area, or proportionate value, and to have tho whole reward offered by the Provincial Government. It is calculated that there are sufficient funds to employ the four parties for six months. Welltngtox, July 16. Mr Travers last night made a violent denunciation of provincialism while speaking on Mr Stevens's resolutions. Mr Vogel made a very powerful speech against the proposals. Mr Jollie approved of much of the priuciple, but feared that the preamble would interfere with immediate justice to Timaru and Gladstone. Mr Carlcton supported the resolutions. Mr Stafford expressed approval of much of the principle of some, but not of all, and asked to have the resolutions put singly. The Government opposed this, but eventually gave way. Mr Rolleston to-night spoke stronsrly in favor of the resolutions. [Mr Stevens's resolutions were subsequently withdrawn.] July 20. In the Legislative Council to-day, for the first time in the colony's history, counsel were beard at the Bar. Messrs Hart and Whittaker appeared for and against the Thames Proclamation Validation Bill, on behalf of the Superintendent of Auckland and Robert Graham respectively. The House of Representatives have been all day discussing Major Browu's privilege case. The matter is likely to be referred to a Select Committee.
